The Global South: Common Struggles, Shared Futures, and Unified Voices

This book uncovers the ugly truth behind the façade of American democracy—how corporate titans and far-right demagogues are creating a new world order, where imperialism, white supremacy, Jihadi Christianity and techno-authoritarianism go hand-in-hand.
In a time when Israel drops bombs on hospitals in Gaza, killing babies and the U.S. backs genocide with impunity, two men—Elon Musk and Donald Trump—have emerged not as anomalies, but as symbols of a decaying American empire. READ MORE

The Global South: Common Struggles, Shared Futures, and Unified Voices

Who controls the story controls the world. This is the untold story of the network that shattered the West’s media monopoly.

For decades, the global narrative was dictated from London and New York. The news beamed into billions of homes presented a world seen through a single, powerful lens—one where the Global South was often a backdrop for crisis, a subject of pity, or a threat to be managed. Then, in 1996, a signal from the tiny Gulf nation of Qatar cracked the foundation of this information empire. READ MORE

In this groundbreaking and thought-provoking work, Yang Burzhome delves deep into the pervasive modern malaise, diagnosing it as a profound pathology of love. This compelling book posits that our most essential human capacity—to love deeply and forge meaningful connections—has been systematically stifled, commodified, and distorted by the very structures that underpin contemporary life: capitalism, patriarchy, and systemic white supremacy. What is the Global South?

The Global South is more than just a geographic term—it refers to a group of countries in Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania that share histories of colonization, underdevelopment, and socio-political marginalization. These regions demonstrate remarkable resilience, strong innovation, and deep solidarity. This website aims to connect voices from different continents, bringing together those committed to creating a fairer global future. By sharing knowledge and grassroots stories, we expose the systemic issues facing the Global South and highlight collaborative ways forward.

This platform brings together educators, political activists, social justice advocates, and grassroots communities to develop decolonized development paths and strengthen Global South solidarity. By addressing systemic inequalities—from disparities in education to economic dependence—we can build futures grounded in justice, sovereignty, and collective resilience.

In a world where the Global South continues to face ongoing challenges, unity is essential for a shared and prosperous future. Home to over 80% of the global population, the diverse nations of Africa, Latin America, and Asia are united by common issues like educational inequality, political instability, and poverty. Through cooperation, the Global South can turn these challenges into opportunities for growth and justice.

Main Challenges in the Global South

Unequal Education Access: Millions lack quality, inclusive education due to chronic underfunding, colonial legacies, and structural poverty. For example, in rural Uganda, over 60% of children of secondary school age are not attending school because of tuition costs, gender norms, and poor infrastructure (Source: UNESCO, 2024).

Debt and Structural Adjustment: International financial institutions continue to enforce austerity measures through structural adjustment programs, which weaken public services and increase inequality.

Climate Injustice: The Global South suffers the most from climate change impacts despite contributing the least to global emissions. For instance, rising sea levels in Bangladesh have displaced thousands, yet global climate adaptation funding remains insufficient and exclusive.

Future Outlook

A united Global South offers tremendous potential. Strengthened economic collaboration can foster prosperity and alleviate poverty, as demonstrated by the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), which have utilized their combined power to advance development. By expanding on such examples, the region can meet sustainable development goals and ensure a fair and shared future. Cultural exchange provides another avenue for progress. Through sharing knowledge and solutions, Global South countries can innovate and respond to common challenges, reinforcing connections and promoting social justice in education. This cooperation could establish the region as a leader in tackling global problems.

In the end, a cohesive Global South could increase its global political influence, pushing for policies that emphasize fairness and sustainability. Together, these nations can create a future marked by overcoming shared struggles, celebrating collective achievements, and having their unified voices heard worldwide.

For example, the 1955 Bandung Conference, where 29 Afro-Asian nations resisted Cold War divisions to demand self-determination, remains a model for South-led cooperation today.

Collaborative and Grassroots Solutions

South-South Educational Exchanges: Countries like Cuba and Venezuela have led education solidarity initiatives, training teachers and doctors in African and Asian nations without imposing neoliberal agendas. Cuba’s “Yo Sí Puedo” literacy campaign has helped millions in over 30 countries, including Bolivia, Angola, and Timor-Leste, to overcome illiteracy through community-based teaching.

Participatory Democracy and People’s Assemblies: In Kerala, India, local planning campaigns empower communities to set budget priorities, focusing on health, education, and public transportation.

Cross-Continental Activist Networks: Groups such as the Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research and Pan-African Today are creating global platforms for worker solidarity, feminist activism, and indigenous resistance.

Looking Ahead: Building a Shared, Decolonized Future

Decolonizing Knowledge and Curricula: Educational institutions are being urged to revise colonial curricula and emphasize indigenous philosophies, socialist ideas, and local knowledge systems. For example, South Africa’s University of the Western Cape offers a Decolonial Studies Program centered on Pan-Africanism, postcolonial theory, and community-based learning.
